Equip Classes

Purpose of Equip Classes

At FBC Sparta, we engage in the discipleship process to bring believers to spiritual maturity in Christ for the glory of God. To fulfill the great commission, we evangelize, establish, equip & export. Discipleship occurs through life on life mentoring and through corporate gatherings. In part fulfillment of this goal, we are offering Equip Classes. Equip classes are smaller gatherings on Wednesday nights that are meant to help believers grow in their knowledge and application of the Scriptures. We are offering the following 5 classes:

A Praying Life: Connecting with God in a Distracted World (curriculum: Paul Miller)

Prayer is so hard that unless circumstances demand it—an illness, or saying grace at a meal—most of us simply do not pray. We prize accomplishments and productivity over time in prayer. Even Christians experience this prayerlessness—a kind of practical unbelief that leaves us marked by fear, anxiety, joylessness, and spiritual lethargy. Prayer is all about relationship. Based on the popular seminar by the same name, A praying life has discipled thousands of Christians to a vibrant prayer life full of joy and power. In A Praying Life, author Paul Miller lays out a pattern for living in relationship with God and includes helpful habits and approaches to prayer that enable us to return to a childlike faith.

Church History: Hades’ Gates Won’t Prevail (curriculum: Mark Dever)

It is intended to provide an overview and exploration of the major movements and developments of the Church from its first day until now. Major events, places, people, and theological developments will be identified and discussed in the context of world history. How all this history connects to the shape, conduct, and identity of the Church and of Christians today will be a key question that will be front and center throughout the entire course.

Getting to the Heart of Parenting (Paul Tripp)

Parenting is hard, but there are few things in life that rise to this level of importance. God has chosen parents to be primary instruments in the shaping of a human soul. So often we get it wrong by using power to get our children to behave in certain ways. We establish laws and then play the role of police officer and judge. As Paul Tripp explains, parenting is so much deeper than rules and regulations. A biblical view teaches that parenting is all about the exposure and change of a child’s heart. Permanent behavioral change only occurs when the heart of a person is changed by grace. Getting to the Heart of Parenting covers principles of grace for children 0-5, 6-12, and 13-18. Learn how to become an instrument of heart-changing grace in the lives of your children. This course will be part video based and part interaction.
